‘No Callem’ protocol. New training course to prevent sexual violence in public night-time leisure spaces

Barcelona City Council’s ‘No Callem’ (‘We Won't Keep Quiet’) protocol seeks to prevent, detect and deal with sexual assaults and harassment in night-time leisure spaces that sign up to it. With this collaboration agreement, the City Council is aiming to deal with sexist violence, specifically sexual and LGBTI-phobic violence.

Barcelona’s LGBTI Centre has hosted a new specialised training course for preventing sexual violence in night-time leisure spaces in Barcelona, as part of the ‘No Callem’ protocol. The initiative is organised by the Barcelona Guàrdia Urbana (GUB – city police) in collaboration with Barcelona City Council’s Feminism and LGBTI Department. The main objective is to educate night-time leisure spaces in the prevention of sexist violence and to offer tools and resources for taking action and providing support for anyone who suffers any kind of sexual assault.

Each session lasted four hours and combined theory with practical, dynamic group workshops. In total, more than 150 people linked to the night-time leisure sector participated.

The organisers highlighted the importance of creating safe spaces free of sexist violence.

‘No Callem’ protocol in place since 2018

This initiative is part of the ‘No Callem’ protocol, a collaboration agreement launched in 2018 with around 40 night-time leisure spaces committed to those who want equality in their leisure experience.

‘No Callem’ also includes support for spaces that sign up to the agreement, with advice from professionals specialising in sexist violence, monitoring and coordination to improve circuits and prevention, and the application of specific measures, including restriction of access for people with abusive or disrespectful attitudes and behaviour and detection of vulnerable spaces – such as dark or concealed areas – to prevent any dangerous situations from occurring.
