Use of public transport in the Barcelona area dropped by nearly half in 2020, with 559 million journeys made. To ensure mobility, the service has not been interrupted at any time during the Covid-19 pandemic. Hygiene and safety protocols have been strengthened and adapted to the current health context.
Demand slumped by between 41 and 48% compared to 2019, falling in similar levels across all the various means of transport. The most significant drop was in March, when usage fell by 92% compared to the same month the previous year.
As a result, income from public transport also fell by 46%. The drop did not affect prices, which have been frozen for 2021.
In terms of the use of different types of tickets, the relative use of monthly passes rose by 16%, while the use of multi-journey tickets fell by 63%. Social tariffs account for 16%, the same as in 2019.
