Extra metro services at night but the network continues to close at midnight.

11/05/2021 - 12:32 h

More trains will be running on the metro system from 10 pm to midnight, given the increase in activity and the end of the state of emergency. Even so, given that the authorities are keeping night-life venues closed, the metro network is sticking to its fixed operating times of 5 am to midnight, seven days a week.

Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has adapted its service levels on the metro network following the end of the state of emergency on Sunday 9 May, when the curfew was lifted.

This means that the frequency of trains between 10 pm and midnight is now the same as it was last September, when the number of trains was increased on the busiest lines to ensure safe travel. On working days trains now run every 6 to 7 minutes on conventional lines (L1 to L5).

Train services during these times had actually been adapted due to the low levels of mobility caused by the state of emergency and the 5 pm closing time imposed on bars and restaurants (now 11 pm, the same as for cultural activities and sport), as well as the 10 pm curfew, which is no longer in place.

At all other times of day, the TMB metro network continues to provide maximum service levels as it has done since September, to avoid build-ups of people. Demand on working days, which is rising as the economy is reactivated and employment increases, currently stands at 63% compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Services run from 5 am to midnight seven days a week.

Depending on how the health situation evolves and night-life returns, TMB will be adapting services to cater for the needs of users.

The TMB metro network is currently still operating from 5 am to midnight, seven days a week, the same as other rail services within the system coordinated by the Metropolitan Transport Authority (ATM) in the Barcelona area. As for the TMB bus system, services continue to be adapted to match demand.

In this respect, the public transport system continues to be a safe and essential service, where strict hygiene and cleaning protocols have been in place since the start of the pandemic. In the case of the metro, air inside carriages is completely renewed every two and a half minutes.
