The monument ‘La Sardana’ regains its splendour in Montjuïc

Work to renovate the historical sculpture ‘La Sardana’ has now been completed. Located in the square of the same name in Montjuïc, the sculpture was vandalised in October 2020, with some parts broken and others missing completely. The renovation project cost 28,500 euros.
The sculptor Abel Vallhonesta was tasked with the renovation work, repairing two sets of original hands and arms which were retrieved and recreating the six other sets which were missing. Thanks to documents and photographs, clay models and plaster models and moulds were made to reproduce the stone parts that have been added back onto the monument. The work also repaired some cracks and put back some small elements made from suitable materials, with the whole monument being cleaned to achieve a more uniform appearance.
A monument with over half a century of history
La sardana is the work of the sculptor Josep Cañas, with the collaboration of Carles Amadon. Sculpted in limestone from Ulldecona, the work represents four couples from the dance group Colla Sardanista Violetes del Bosc and was inaugurated at the entrance to the fairground in Montjuïc in 1966. It was restored in 1984 and had to be repaired some years later following various acts of vandalism.
