New access planned at the Olympic Port to facilitate connectivity with the local area
16/06/2022 - 15:04 h
Work gets under way in July and will create a direct connection with the port, opening it up to the vitality of the city and linking it closely with everyday life in the area, with Av. Litoral and Pg. Moll de Mestral. The project will also allow vehicles to directly access the B:SM Litoral Port car park, which will be renovated as well.
A later stage starting at the end of September will see the Moll de Mestral wharf turned into a large square of 10,000 square metres, while the sea wall will act as a new viewing point in front of the sea, for people to walk along and pursue sports. Once the work is finished, this will be the main entrance to the port. This stage will also be used to dismantle the ramp for vehicles at the end of Carrer de Marina, also eliminating the visual impact it generates.
Backing for the blue economy and nautical services
Work in this area will also mean more progress in backing the blue economy. The wharf and the sea wall will make up the first centre in this sector in the city, committed to social and economic development which is respectful towards marine ecosystems. In the case of the Olympic Port, the idea is to specialise in nautical services and activities, the circular economy and innovation and tech.
The former nightlife venues that were in this space will become a hub of 2,600 square metres to attract businesses and enterprise in the blue economy, creating an estimated 250 new jobs. The space will be distributed into 23 premises, in two blocks of offices either side of the new access.
The buildings will also include some communal spaces, such as a function room with a capacity for 150 people, available to any user of the port facilities and also to citizens and companies to organise activities there. The revamp is expected to be completed in September 2023.
As a whole, the projects involve an investment of nearly 18 million euros, form part of the strategic areas for the new Olympic Port and represent a boost before the city hosts the America’s Cup in 2024.
