Strategy to halve emissions from delivery vehicles
21/02/2023 - 12:03 h
In a bid to make urban goods distribution more efficient and sustainable, Barcelona City Council and the city’s main business associations and unions in this sector have agreed on a strategy with ten goals. The intention is to halve emissions by delivery vehicles by 2030, and for 40% of online orders not to be delivered to homes but rather to parcel collection points. To help achieve this, the network of collection points will be expanded so that everybody has one within 200 metres of their home.
The main goals of the Municipal Strategy on Urban Goods Distribution (DUM) 2030 are to:
- Increase loading and unloading hours in regulated spaces by 20% and rebalance demand. Indoor spaces at markets will also be enlarged for loading and unloading at night.
- Deliver 40% of online purchases to collection points. The network of pick-up facilities will be enlarged so that everybody has one within 200 metres of their home. The intention is also for 33% of deliveries to be through Urban Goods Distribution Centres.
- Reduce emissions from delivery vehicles by half. Measures will be taken to help with the switch to more sustainable and zero-emissions vehicles.
- Multiply the number of bikes and delivery bikes by ten and have an urban delivery service on the rail network.
- Cut traffic accidents, victims and those sustaining serious injuries where delivery vehicles are involved.
- Curb indiscipline by 60% among drivers of DUM vehicles.
- Maintain the square metres of industrial land within the city used for the reception and distribution of goods.
- Create a DUM office to improve communication between consumers and distribution companies.
- Expand use of the SPRO app to 75% of metropolitan municipalities. This app is for drivers to look for the nearest loading and unloading areas and validate parking there.
- Promote research and the creation of technological and innovation solutions linked to urban goods distribution.
