The free textile collection service recycles 45 tonnes in six weeks

The goal is to promote and improve the reuse and recycling of textiles, prevent waste and incentivise the circular economy. The service can be requested via the 010 phone service and accepts clothing, textile accessories, footwear, towels, sheets and curtains.
The first six weeks of the service saw 811 collections made, with items to go to second-hand shops, export initiatives and the creation of new fibres where textiles can’t be reused.
The textile industry is the fourth biggest when it comes to the demand for raw materials and water, and the fifth biggest in terms of greenhouse-gas emissions. The initiative comes as part of the Barcelona Zero Waste Plan, which also includes initiatives such as “Renew your clothes”, “Renew your toys” and mobile units such as the Reparatruck and the Didaltruck, plus the Zero Plastic Group.
A zero waste meeting was also organised today (15 March) entitled “Fem camí cap al residu zero”, with various organisations sharing experiences and initiatives in different spheres.
