Who’s who on the new Full Council for the 2023-2027 term of office?
17/06/2023 - 18:06 h
The composition of the new Full Council for the 2023-2027 term of office fails to regain parity, with 22 men and 19 women, with an average age higher than the previous two terms of office: 51.4 years of age compared to 50.8 during the last period, from 2019 to 2023. The results of the elections on 28 May make for a more experienced Full Council: 24 of the 41 councillors have experience in the role (20 from the last term of office and 4 form previous ones), with 17 newcomers.
These are the 41 councillors, from 6 different political groups, who will be representing the people of Barcelona on the Full Council for the next term of office:
The new Full Council continues without achieving parity and will be made up of 22 men and 19 women. By political formation, the municipal groups of TriasxBCN, the PSC and the ERC respect parity, while only one of the four representatives for the PP is a woman and VOX has no women representatives. BComú is the only group headed by a woman and where women represent a majority (6 out of 9).
A year and a half older
The average age of the new organisation is higher than the previous terms of office at 51.4 years of age. The figure is higher than the average age of 49.8 from when the Full Council started the last term of office and the figure of 50.8 from 2015.
Ernest Maragall (aged 80, ERC) will again be the oldest councillor, followed by Xavier Trias (74, Trias×BCN) and Albert Batlle (70, PSC). At the other end of the scale, the youngest councillor will be Jéssica González Herrera (34, BComú). Jordi Castellana (35, ERC), Marc Serra (36, BComú), Marta Villanueva (37, PSC) and Janet Sanz (39, BComú) are the other representatives under the age of 40.
Renewed
The Full Council is replacing over half its members. Just twenty councillors from the last term of office are back, while 21 are new, 17 of them taking their seat in the Sala Carles Pi i Sunyer for the very first time. Four councillors are back on the Full Council after a period of absence.
Experienced
Besides the 24 people who have experience as councillors with the City Council, the new organisation also brings experience gained with other administrations: 12 representatives have been ministers with the Government of Catalonia; 16 have been members of the Parliament of Catalonia; 2 have been members of the Spanish parliament; 2 have occupied seats in the European Parliament and 1 in the Spanish Senate.
In addition, and for the first time ever, four former mayors will be on the Full Council at the same time. Three have been mayors of Barcelona: Xavier Trias (Trias×BCN), between 2011 and 2015, Ada Colau (BComú), between 2015 and 2023, and the current Mayor, Jaume Collboni (PSC). The fourth figure is Jordi Valls (PSC), who was the Mayor of Manresa from 1995 to 2006.
