Work begins on the L8 extension on Monday, 8 January
05/01/2024 - 12:42 h
On 8 January work begins on the extension of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Line 8 (Llobregat - Anoia line), from Pl. Espanya to Gràcia. These works will have an impact on public space and include the construction of a four-kilometre tunnel, three new stations and the renovation of two existing stations.
These works, promoted by the Generalitat de Catalunya’s Departament de Territori, include the construction of a four-kilometre tunnel and three new stations as well as the renovation of two existing ones, and are expected to take around 58 months (approximately five years) to complete.
The initial works involve setting up the work site, excavation work and the construction of drains, and the coming months will see the progression of surface-level works which, during this first phase, will have little impact on mobility. At a later stage there will be some disruption to mobility, and the details will be communicated as the works get under way.
The construction works will affect five areas: Pl. Espanya; C. Comte d’Urgell at the junction with C. Consell de Cent; C. Comte d’Urgell at the junction with C. Rosselló; C. Comte d’Urgell, between C. Buenos Aires and Pl. Francesc Macià, and Pl. Gal·la Placídia at the junction with Travessera de Gràcia.
Disruption around Pl. Francesc Macià
For the construction of the new Pl. Francesc Macià station, which will be located under C. Comte d’Urgell between Pl. Francesc Macià and C. Buenos Aires, the works are expected to cut off the chamfer on the Llobregat – ’mountain’ side of the junction of C. Comte d’Urgell and C. Buenos Aires, and also the inside block of the C. Comte d’Urgell. A footpath for pedestrians will always be provided.
During the first few months, excavation work will be carried out to locate utility services, and this will mean that two traffic lanes and the bus lane on C. Comte d’Urgell, will be closed. One lane will still be open to traffic, and the cycle lane will not be affected.
Bus stops in the area serving AMB lines V9, N12, 1798, L57a will be affected, as will the Bus Turístic, and these services will be stopping on C. Comte d’Urgell at the junction with C. París.
Disruption around Pl. Espanya
The entrance shaft for the tunnel borer will be located at the exit from Pl. d’Espanya heading towards C. Llançà under Gran Via. The works will also occupy space on the side of Av. Paral·lel.
From 12 January excavation work will be carried out on the pavement on the mountain-facing side of Gran Via, by the Escola Francesc Macià. A footpath will be provided at all times, and traffic will not be affected. Work will then be done on the pavement on the sea-facing side of Gran Via and also on C. Mèxic, but will not affect the road or public transport.
Disruption around Gràcia Station
During this initial phase of the works, the demolition and dismantling of urban furniture and other elements will take place, and the removal and replanting of the trees situated in this area of the works.
On 8 and 9 January, a new access road to the works site will need to be constructed, and will be located on Via Augusta by Pl. Gal·la Placídia. This will involve closing the cycle lane, which will be diverted onto the pavement by means of provisional access ramps.
In Plaça de Gal·la Placídia, the works will occupy the green space, part of the pavement on Via Augusta, and the children’s play area in the square. A pedestrian footpath will be provided at all times.
Disruption at the crossroads between C. Consell de Cent and C. Comte d’Urgell
In this area, the works will entail occupying the cycle lane on the Llobregat side of Carrer del Comte d’Urgell, and two traffic lanes on this street. Two lanes will remain in operation, and buses will be able to use one of them. The works are not expected to have an impact on vehicles using the central lane of C. Consell de Cent, and the exit heading uphill on C. Comte d’Urgell will remain operational, via the chamfer crossroads.
The cycle lane will be closed between C. Diputació and C. Consell de Cent. Bicycle traffic will be diverted: uphill along C. Diputació, C. Comte Borrell and C. Consell de Cent, and will rejoin the usual route on C. Comte d’Urgell; downhill: along C. Consell de Cent, C. Comte Borrell as far as Gran Via, in the most appropriate direction.
Disruption around Hospital Clínic
With regard to the construction of the new Hospital Clínic station, which will be situated on C. Comte d’Urgell, between C. Rosselló and C. Còrsega, the works will mainly occupy the two chamfers at the crossroads between Comte d’Urgell and C. Rosselló.
They will occupy part of the road (loading/ unloading area and taxi bay) and part of the pavement, but a footpath will be provided at all times.
As work will be taking place in the inner courtyard in the grounds of the Escola Industrial at the crossroads between C. Rosselló and C. Comte d’Urgell, a new access way to the Edifici del Rellotge will be set up on C. Rosselló.
