Smart stops and AI to improve circulation, the winning projects in the urban innovation challenge
26/06/2024 - 14:45 h
The urban innovation challenge to improve the efficiency of the bus network has some winners. The two winning projects will receive nearly 200,000 euros to conduct a pilot test and assess their feasibility.
The challenge to boost the efficiency of the bus network was a joint initiative between the Fundació BIT Habitat, Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona and Fira de Barcelona.
Turning bus-stops into data centres
The solution from the Canadian company Buspas would enable bus-stops to offer information about the bus network and roads in real time. At the same time, the stop provides the operator with real-time information to improve the service.
Artificial intelligence to improve circulation in bus lanes
The second winning project, by the US company Hayden AI, uses computer vision, cameras and sensors with 5G connectivity to protect bus lanes and bus-stops. The system will be installed onboard buses, protected from the weather. The goal is to use data to see how the occupancy of stops and lanes affects the functioning of public transport and to optimise its speed.
Both solutions comply with European data protection regulations.
The urban innovation challenge attracted 25 projects from home and abroad.
