Ideas competition to foster women’s use of the city’s sport circuits

29/06/2024 - 12:00 h

The main goal is to find solutions that guarantee equality, safety and women’s autonomy in the use of urban sports circuits for walking or running.

Barcelona City Council, through the Barcelona Institute of Sports and BIT Habitat, has launched the innovative ideas competition “Circuits esportius en femení”. The goal is to find innovative ideas to increase women’s use of the city sport circuits, responding to the difficulties that 36.5% of women experience in public space, according to the City Council’s Òmnibus Survey.

The proposals will have to improve the perception of safety in these spaces, taking into account factors such as design, lighting, visibility and the presence of pedestrians. Particular attention will be given to ideas with an intersectional focus, addressing other causes of inequality such as origin, age and ability.

The prize money for the competition totals 50,000 euros. The three projects with the best scores will each get 2,500 euros, with the winner to get a subsidy of 42,500 euros to conduct a pilot project in the city in 2025.

Participation

Proposals may be submitted from 1 July to 6 September. The winning projects will be chosen between September and October. Initiatives must meet criteria such as:

  • Using existing or new technology in line with the Sport Tech sector.
  • Having a multi-disciplinary focus.
  • Offering prototypes that can be implemented in a period of 4 to 6 months.
  • Being able to be scaled up in the short term and economically sustainable.

The initiative is a municipal commitment to promote gender equality and create safer and more accessible sports spaces for all, making the city a leader in sports innovation and inclusion.
