Disruptions to the R2 Nord and the Rodalies R11 train lines from 17 September to 10 December

31/08/2022 - 11:57 h

The work managed by Adif relating to the new Sant Andreu Comtal and La Sagrera station will involve train traffic changes on the R2 Nord and R11 lines for three months. There will also be disruptions to the service on the R1 line on 17, 18 and 19 September, on 29 and 30 October and on 12 and 13 November.

The project is intended to put the Barcelona-Granollers-Girona conventional gauge line’s final route and the new Sant Andreu Rodalies station into service by the end of the year.

This will enable the elimination of the current ground-level route and the removal of the historical barrier that the line caused between the Sant Martí and Sant Andreu neighbourhoods. In addition, it will also allow the creation of a new, more modern and accessible station with more space for the public.

Traffic disruptions

As the work is very large scale, trains will not be able to travel while it goes ahead, which means there will be travel restrictions in several lines between 17 September and 10 December:

R2 Nord and R11 lines:

  • On 17 and 18 September and from 3 to 10 December: the lines will close between Passeig de Gràcia station and Sant Andreu Comtal. Trains will start and end their journeys at Montcada i Reixac. Users will be able to make their interchange by walking to Montcada i Reixac – Manresa station, for links to the R4, R12 and R7 train lines.
  • A complementary Montcada i Reixac bus service will be operating every 15 minutes on those days, from 6 am to 10 pm, from Montcada i Reixac station to La Sagrera – Meridiana.

The Airport service’s trains will start and finish at Barcelona – França Station.

  • 19 September to 2 December: the lines will close between Passeig de Gràcia and Sant Andreu Comtal (excluded). Trains will start and finish their routes at Sant Andreu Comtal. Passengers will make their interchange at the Sant Andreu stop (metro line 1).

A complementary shuttle bus service between Sant Andreu and La Sagrera – Meridiana will be operating every fifteen minutes on work days, from 6 am to 10 am and from 4 pm to 8 pm .

Granollers-Centre passengers will have coaches at their disposal, on workdays, from 6 am to 10.30 am, travelling directly to Barcelona La Sagrera – Meridiana, and between Barcelona La Sagrera – Meridiana and Granollers-Centre, from 5 pm to 8.30 pm. Coach times will be from 8 am to 10.45 am and from 6 pm to 8.45 pm, in each direction, on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

The Airport service’s trains will start and finish at Barcelona – França Station.

R1 line:

    • From 17 to 19 September, on the weekends of 29 and 30 October, and 12 and 13 November:  Trains will start or finish their journeys at Badalona.

Service users will have the Badalona Pompeu Fabra stop (metro line 2) at their disposal for making their interchange. In addition, they will also have an alternative TRAM transport service available from Sant Adrià de Besòs.

Timetable changes and extra information

There will be timetable changes during every period of disruption to the lines concerned, to provide better services. There will also be extra help and information staff at hand to guide and advise service users. Even so, note that, whenever interchanges are required, travel times will be longer than usual.

What does the work involve?

The new route for the conventional gauge line is 4.3 km long, of which 2.8 km will be sunk underground. The new route will start under the Nus de la Trinitat interchange. Having passed along an outside section, it will enter the Sant Andreu tunnel, with a stop at the future Sant Andreu Rodalies [local commuter] train station, before it then goes inside La Sagrera, where the trains will continue.

The line will have four tracks inside the two stations and the tunnel connecting them will have three. It will continue from La Sagrera station, by tunnel as well, to link up with El Clot. As for structures, 20 metres of 19-metre-deep screens, 27 fourteen-metre-deep pilings, roof sections with more than 400 beams and walls over 200 metres long are expected to be put up, as well as 1,500 metres of ballastless track and 9 track apparatuses laid out and 600 metres of overhead lines from flexible to rigid.

The La Sagrera – Sant Andreu project will be partly funded by the NextGenerationEU – European Union.
