The 30 km/h speed limit will not apply to school areas this August
13/07/2023 - 13:33 h
The speed limit of 30 km/h in areas around schools located in streets on the basic road network is to be eased outside of school hours. The limit will apply from Monday to Saturday, between 7 am and 10 pm. A speed limit of 50 km/h will apply in these areas at night, on Sundays and public holidays and during the month of August.
The goal is to continue to guarantee children’s safety when they come in and out of school, and to ease the measure when entrances to schools are closed. Signage will be amended from August and work will take four weeks.
There are 33 street sections on the basic road network which go past schools. Speed cameras are in operation in 12 of them, and limits will also be adapted there. Fines will be given where vehicles are detected breaking the 50 km/h or 30 km/h limits in place.
New radar speed signs
In parallel, work began this month to install 28 new radar speed signs in the city. These are expected to come into service in the second half of 2023 to make drivers aware of the speed they are travelling at.
