Fostering educational play outdoors with “Let’s play in the squares”
07/08/2022 - 12:09 h
The programme offers various recreational activities and materials in 47 spaces around the city this summer. The initiative forms part of the “Barcelona, Playable City” plan, the goal being to boost public space as a suitable environment for children to grow and develop in.
The goal is to promote the habit of getting together in squares and parks so that public space becomes a place for positive relationships and learning. The initiative was already in place at several points around the city, but is now being firmed up and structured within the context of the Educating City and according to the Play Plan for Public Space 2030.
The spaces are located around 27 neighbourhoods in eight city districts: Ciutat Vella, L’Eixample, Sants-Montjuïc, Gràcia, Horta-Guinardó, Nou Barris, Sant Andreu and Sant Martí.
Children and their families can enjoy play options in different formats and with various dynamics:
- Mobile games kiosk: launched this summer and consisting of a mobile unit offering a varied array of traditional and circus games, board games, large-format street games, discovery and experimentation activities etc. The unit is operated by monitors who help with play activities and ensure the proper use of materials. The service is currently offered regularly in two spaces in the district of Sant Andreu.
- Games shack: a temporary play space with different play corners (constructions, symbolic play, board games etc.), adapted to different age groups. The space is assembled and dismantled according to hours of service, offering a fixed play space with monitors to help with play activities and ensure good use.
- Game loans: recreational material made available for young children and their families to use without supervision. Neighbourhood facilities and/or shops look after these materials and lend them to people free of charge. There are no monitors.
The calendar and times for the programme “Juguem a les places” can be found on the Barcelona Education website.
