More trains and higher frequencies for the metro in 2023

27/12/2023 - 15:19 h

The year 2023 will end with a record number of trains operated by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB). A total of 165 trains run on the network between 7 and 9.30 am from Monday to Friday, ten more than in 2019. During the weekday evening rush hour, between 5 and 8.30 pm, 145 trains run on the network, nine more than four years ago. This has increased the frequency to less than three minutes on the busiest lines.

On lines 1 and 5, the two busiest lines on the network, the morning rush hour frequency is 2 minutes 55 seconds and 2 minutes 29 seconds respectively.

In October, more than 40.9 million journeys were made on the metro alone. This included 1.65 million journeys on 31 October, breaking the previous record for the highest number of journeys in a single day.

In 2023, 14 international-gauge 7000 trains were put into service on Line 3 and nine Iberian-gauge 8000 trains were put into service on Line 1, in keeping with the contract awarded to Alstom by public tender for €318.86 million. The rest of the trains, up to the 50 purchased, will gradually enter service in 2024.
