More space for pedestrians and sustainable transport with the remodelled Av. Diagonal
15/07/2024 - 19:07 h
In parallel to the first stage of the work to connect the tram systems between Glòries and Verdaguer, the section of Av. Diagonal between the streets of Los Castillejos and Pg. Sant Joan has been remodelled and repaved, with current spatial uses rearranged here. The tram track is located along the central part of the avenue, with pavements widened and green spaces to be added in the autumn. The two-way bike lane has also been relocated.
Trams circulating between Glòries and Verdaguer from the autumn will cover a route along Av. Diagonal which has been completely revamped. Trams will circulate along the central section of the avenue, which has wider pavements and more green spaces, fostering sustainable mobility.
Reurbanisation between Los Castillejos and Pg. Sant Joan
Pedestrians gain 17,290 square metres of space with wider pavements, with some parts increasing their width from 2.8 metres to 9.7 metres between Pg. Sant Joan and C/ Sicília, and from 4.8 metres to 16 metres in C/ Sardenya and C/ Marina. The pavements also have new urban furniture and new lighting.
Another 8,965 square metres of green spaces will be added from the autumn, with parterres created and 266 trees planted, 89 of them existing trees that were removed during the work. In all, 7,753 square metres of greenery is to be added in the section where the tram will circulate, along with 1,734 sqaure metres at the newly configured Pl. Pablo Neruda.
New bike lane
The bike lane in the avenue has been shifted to the central road surface between C/ Sardenya and C/ Girona, on the side lane nearest the mountains between Rambla dels Encants and C/ Sardenya. The change means the bike lane is wider and segregated at pedestrian crossings. The bike lane traffic lights will coincide with the ones for the tram when it comes into operation.
