Schools with street-calmed surroundings to number 155 in 2022
08/05/2021 - 10:11 h
Areas around 155 schools will offer spaces with fewer vehicles, with a series of projects planned through until 2022 to create healthier and more pleasant surroundings for people to meet in. The work includes reducing traffic lanes, creating open spaces with play elements, adding signage and installing safety features.
Work planned in 2020 (26 projects completed) and for 2021 (74 to be executed between July and August to avoid clashing with term times) will mean:
- 14,150 m2 of asphalt turned into spaces with benches and play elements.
- 16 streets with pedestrian priority.
- 10 fewer traffic lanes.
The final projects for the 54 actions planned in 2022 are currently being drafted.
How are the schools chosen?
The selection is made in coordination with the local area, with priority given to:
- Children up to the age of 12.
- Areas where road safety is complex.
- Areas with high levels of noise and air pollution.
More health and well-being
The measures to calm areas around schools helps cut noise and air pollution, favouring interaction between local people in the new meeting spaces created.
To identify these benefits more precisely, nine schools which have already got calmed entrance areas will be assessing all these parameters this year.
