The Ukrainian association ‘Djerelo’ marked the 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence on Saturday by helping to plant 25 trees near Passeig del Migdia. The initiative came as part of the international campaign ‘Greening Planet’ and was carried out in conjunction with the Municipal Institute for Parks and Gardens, which suggested planting species suited to the Mediterranean climate, such as holm oak, field maple and hawthorn for this new ‘Ukrainian Garden’ on Montjuïc.
Nearly a hundred people from various schools and Ukrainian organisations gathered on Saturday at the site chosen in Passeig del Migdia, between the Pau Negre municipal sports centre and Montjuïc cemetery. The ceremony was attended by the Ukrainian Consul to Barcelona and featured music from the women’s vocal group Kalina, who performed various traditional Ukrainian songs. Besides planting the 25 trees and five small bushes, with all participants getting involved and safety measures in place against the transmission of Covid-19 at all times, a commemorative plaque was unveiled.
The international campaign ‘Greening Planet’, promoted from Ukraine, aims to plant 100 million trees around the planet in three years.
