A baby of the critically endangered spider monkey species has been born at Barcelona Zoo. The facility is involved in the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), which works towards the conservation of animals at risk.
Protected by its mother Emi at all times, the new-born monkey is in perfect health.
The family of spider monkeys at Barcelona Zoo consists of a male named Sito, three adult females, four young females and the baby, which has not yet been sexed.
The species inhabits the jungle in the northern area of South America, where deforestation and illegal hunting has cut its population by 80% in 45 years.
Survival and conservation
The Zoo participates in the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) for the spider monkey.
One of the main goals is to ensure the survival of the species, promote its conservation in the wild and reintroduce it to its habitat providing circumstances allow for it.
