Water saving measures for municipal sports facilities
02/02/2024 - 15:02 h
Barcelona City Council is implementing new measures in municipal sports facilities in accordance with the activation of Emergency Phase I and the Special Action Plan in situation of alert and possible drought (PEA) approved by the Generalitat de Catalunya on 1 February 2023 (ACORD GOV/1/2020, of 8 January, Amendment to Plan by GOV AGREEMENT/18/2024 and RESOLUTION/220/2024)
The measures are as follows:
- A 25% reduction is the number of showers available in all changing rooms in municipal sports facilities.
- The use of showers is forbidden to federated / non-federated teams / commercial leagues on weekdays. Showers may only be used after official federated matches on weekends.
- A communication campaign will be launched in all centres “1 shower – 3 minutes” to promote the responsible use of showers in the facilities.
- To guarantee compliance with the regulation, swimming pool filtration will be reduced to the essential minimum.
- Monitoring of water consumption in each centre so as to ensure the effectiveness of and compliance with the water saving measures.
- Over time, the taps on hand wash basins that do not have a timed flow will be replaced, shower restrictors and tap aerators will be installed where these are not already in place, and more information will be provided to users of the facilities.
- It will also be prohibited to water natural grass sports fields and other surfaces that require watering (artificial grass, clay courts, gravel, etc.), except when they are watered with regenerated water or with non-potable groundwater, using the minimum amount of water required, preferably at times when sunlight is low and applying additional saving measures, which can include closing the showers so as to save a volume of water equivalent to that used for watering.
