Blue Pavilion, the benchmark macro-space for practising sport on the Waterfront
This initiative aims to turn Barcelona’s waterfront into ‘the city’s large new sports facility’.
It is a project that mainly consists of developing the Barcelona waterfront as a large-scale venue for practising sport through practices and facilities associated with sea-and-sand sports, along with the urban spaces in this same area, like promenades, parks and other areas that have been conquered by sport. The Blue Pavilion is an all-encompassing concept.
Thus, this project is identified with the entire waterfront and port stretching from Port Vell to Port Fòrum, including the new Port Entrance and the Olympic Port, as well as Barcelona’s Marine Platform and all its beaches. It includes up to 17 schools and 46 spaces, marine areas and sports facilities. In addition, more than 40 different regulated sports activities will be done there in the sand or water or on dry ground, and it is expected to serve as the venue for dozens of important sporting events and activities in the city.
Action Plan 2022-2030
The Blue Pavilion is the umbrella project aimed at defining and enhancing the value of physical activity along the waterfront, a space in the city that is 5 kilometres long. The project defines 7 steering projects, 4 preferred action islands--the areas where the transformation will start--and a total of 232 specific actions. This action plan is slated to be developed from 2022 to 2030, with an initial planned investment of €26.7 million.
Maritime coastline
Barcelona has a sports facility that overlooks the sea and the beach. It is the Espai de Mar Municipal Sports Facility (Paseo Marítimo, 5), which schedules a wide variety of sports activities and offers a variety of services, all of them associated with the city’s coastline.
Open Waters encompasses the city’s open-water swimming activities. With several routes along the Barcelona coastline and complementary activities and proposals, this initiative makes the sea even more accessible for the city’s inhabitants.
