Barcelona Sport and Physical Activity Observatory

The Observatory's main objective is to analyse and collate the various sources of data that make it possible to continually monitor and evaluate the city's sports system. In order to achieve this objective, it is essential to have suitable comparative evaluation and analysis tools.
It also aims to study the evolution of Barcelona's system and propose appropriate studies and work, so that Barcelona can be compared to other cities and countries.

IMPACT OF SPORT

SPORTS PRACTICE

Playing sports is part of the culture of our city. Over the years, the popularity of sports has grown and evolved, adapting to the trends, initiatives and needs of people in all areas and territories.

Beyond the exercise itself, its integration in different social spheres imbues sport with several functions within the fabric of society, making it an important feature in the educational, public health, social, cultural, recreational and economic spheres.

The Barcelona City Council periodically conducts studies to determine the level of sports practice by citizens and its characteristics. Basically, it conducts two surveys, one aimed at the school-age population (compulsory education, between 5 and 16 years of age) and the other aimed at the adult population (17 years of age and older). From these studies, it is possible to obtain a picture of how much people play sports and exercise in Barcelona, sport trends and possible needs.
