17 May, International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia: reading of the Barcelona LGBTI Council manifesto

14/05/2021 - 15:09

Reading of the Barcelona LGBTI Council’s manifesto to mark 17 May, the International Day against Homphobia and Transphobia.

The World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses on 17 May 1990. This year marks the 31st anniversary of that landmark in the fight against LGBTI-phobia.

To mark this landmark and continue advancing in rights, we are celebrating the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia on 17 May.

Every year the Municipal LGBTI Council collaborates with a district in the city proposed within the framework of the Council, to organise a central event and activities programme for demanding and defending rights and fighting against Homophobia and Transphobia, with the aim of raising awareness of sexual and gender diversity among city residents. Nou Barris was the chosen district for celebrating this annual event in 2019. The commemorative events held in 2020 had to be limited because of the Covid-19 health situation and the Council’s associations read out a joint statement in the Rambla de les Flors.

This year’s event will be held on Monday, 17 May 2021, at 12 noon, in the Sant Antoni Superblock, at the junction between C/ Comte Borrell and C/ Parlament, where the manifest prepared by the Council’s associations will be read out.

The event will be hosted by Quim Esteban, a presenter on the Ràdio 4 programme, Plurals i Singulars.

The manifesto aims to denounce the oppression suffered by LGBTI individuals, highlighting the various areas of inequality that affect them: gender, social class, origins, religion and functional diversity, among other things.

The following will be taking part in its reading: Chryssalis, FLG, Enruta’t, Casal Lambda, Gais Positius, the Enllaç Foundation, ACATHI, GAG, La Nostra Illa, Generem!, the Observatory against Homphobia, Can Portabella and the Biblioteca del Bon Pastor at the Sant Andreu LGBTI Board and the Castellers LGBTI Committee at the Gràcia LGBTI Board.
