Barcelona has a budget for 2024
02/05/2024 - 18:35 h
The municipal budget for 2024 is for 3,807 million euros, up 5.9% on the previous year. The budget was approved automatically following the confidence issue activated by the Full Council at the end of March, and after no no-confidence motion was made or an alternative candidate put forward to become Mayor during the month-long period established under these circumstances.
One budgetary item that stands out is current expenditure for social services and promotion, reaching 438,7 million euros. The second most notable item is for community well-being, with 419 million euros for ordering and taking care of public space, while the chapter on safety and prevention is for 396 million euros and includes an additional 125 City Police officers.
The budget means a significant increase in the City Council’s capacity for investment, reaching 777.6 million euros and rising to 944 million if we also count the actions to be carried out through municipal companies and organisations. This will enable projects for this term of office to go ahead, including the transformation of La Rambla, the covering of the Ronda de Dalt, the renovation of the Mercat de l’Abaceria, the School Climate Control Plan, the Neighbourhood Plan and so on.
Another notable aspect is the priority of boosting the public housing stock, with a budgetary item of 153 million euros.
Financial solvency
The budget guarantees the principle of solvency and balance and compliance with fiscal regulations. It provides for zero deficit and will devote over 15% of current revenue to investment. The level of debt provided for in 2024 remains stable, below 35% of current revenue.
