The collection of bitter oranges from trees in six district takes place from 2 to 5 February. The fruit will be used to make marmalade. This is the third year this initiative has been organised to promote food use. The participating districts are Sant Andreu, Les Corts, Ciutat Vella, Sant Martí and Gràcia, with L’Eixample also joining in for the first time. The collection is part of the “Mans al verd” programme by Parks and Gardens, with the collaboration of the Barcelona Public Health Agency, the Fundació Espigoladors and various social organisations in the districts.

The orange collection will take place on Friday 2 February, in the districts of Sant Andreu and Les Corts, Saturday 3 February, in Sant Martí and Ciutat Vella, Sunday 4 February in Gràcia and Monday 5 February in L’Eixample.

Having been analysed by the Barcelona Public Health Agency, the oranges collected will be processed and turned into marmalade at the social kitchen es im-perfect®. Dubbed “La Marga”, the marmalade will be distributed to social organisations in each of the districts, for people suffering food poverty, at risk of social exclusion or other types of vulnerabilities.

Over 300 volunteers took part in last year’s edition of the project. The exercise transformed a total of 2,671 kg of bitter oranges, which made 11,400 units of marmalade.

Those wishing to take part in this year’s edition should fill in this form. Participants have until 2 February to sign up to take part. Places are limited until groups are full (60 volunteers for each district).
