Increased efforts to stabilise slopes in mountain districts
07/08/2024 - 13:14 h
Slope stabilisation work in Barcelona’s mountain districts will be accelerated under the Comprehensive Maintenance Plan. Over the next four years, around twenty interventions will be carried out on walls and unstable areas that are sensitive to heavy rainfall.
The stabilisation works will be carried out in the districts of Sants-Montjuïc, Sarrià – Sant Gervasi, Gràcia, Horta-Guinardó and Nou Barris, and will include a series of preventive measures to deal with the prolonged periods of drought and heavy rainfall that affect the maintenance of public spaces, which are becoming more frequent as a result of climate change.
Stabilisation works are important in preventing landslides and wall collapses, ensuring safe passage for people. They involve an initial cleaning of the entire area to remove loose elements, followed by covering with a reinforced steel cable mesh anchored to the ground with metal rods. This method preserves public spaces and greenery, while also reinforcing the vegetation structure to enhance biodiversity.
3,000 actions to renew elements in public spaces
The slope stabilisation works are part of the 3,000 major renewal actions set out in the Comprehensive Maintenance Plan, an offshoot of Pla Endreça. This plan looks at city maintenance from a broad perspective, taking into account all services and areas.
