The purpose of this call for applications is to regulate the awarding of Barcelona Institute of Culture grants for projects aimed at “renovating, modernising and providing technical equipment for privately run artistic and cultural creation, experimentation, promotion and exhibition centres; Live Culture venues, bookshops and cinemas that carry out their activities in the city of Barcelona”.
These grants are available to natural or legally incorporated legal persons responsible for managing the spaces that will receive these grants, with the corresponding authorisation (business activity licence or opening notice), where applicable.
Each applicant may present only one grant application for each venue that they own or manage.
- Category A. Independent, privately owned spaces for artistic and cultural creation, experimentation, promotion and exhibition, defined as spaces that support artistic and cultural production, research and exhibition and offer creators resources, tools and services to help them with tests, trials and experimentation. They can include artistic residencies and are transdisciplinary in nature.
- Category B. Live Culture venues: local, small-format (capacity of fewer than 150 people) venues with a social function and a regular cultural programme linked to live music, performing arts or any expression of contemporary art or popular culture, and which serve a social function in the local community, with diversity understood to be a fundamental element. They promote interaction with different institutions, organisations and collectives whose aim is to promote decentralised cultural participation throughout the city of Barcelona, with projects that champion the value of creative and artistic processes carried out in a way that is accessible to the public.
- Category C. Bookshops, defined as establishments that are open to the public and where the sale of books is the main business activity, and which have the corresponding economic activity license or where this is stated as their business purpose in their articles of association or deeds.
- Category D. Cinemas defined as establishments that are open to the public with the corresponding activity license for audiovisual screenings or where this is stated as their business purpose in their articles of association or deeds.
Ineligibility for the grants:
- In regard to construction work and measures to comply with regulations and other improvement work, applications from natural persons or legally incorporated legal persons that manage municipally owned venues, publicly owned cultural institutions and cultural facilities run by public consortia are excluded from these grants.
- Legal or natural persons entitled to receive grants from the Consortium for the Plan for the Renovation and Equipping of Barcelona Theatres.
