The Nose Race 2022 was presented this morning at the Museu Olímpic i de l’Esport Joan Antoni Samaranch, with plenty of new aspects to it, including the possibility of breaking European and world records again like last year. With the event marking the 30th anniversary of the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games, the organisers have opted to see out the year in iconic fashion. Antonio Rebollo, the archer who lit the Olympic flame during the opening ceremony at the Games, will be getting the run under way with one of his legendary shots.
David Escudé, the Councillor for Sport with Barcelona City Council, explained the role of Paralympian archer and triple medallist. “Rebollo will shoot the arrow that lights the flame for each of the four starts in The Nose Race. He’ll be above the arch of LED lights at the start line and will once again demonstrate his accuracy by lighting the censer, a symbolic act concluding the various tributes for the 30th anniversary of the unforgettable Barcelona ’92 Olympic Games”.
Now aged 67, Antonio Rebollo currently works as a cabinetmaker in a carpentry workshop and affirms he is looking forward with excitement to the moment he gets The Nose Race under way: “Even though in the last thirty years they’ve invited me for all sorts of events, being part of this particular event is a real thrill for me. I’ll be In Barcelona to get the race started on 31 December, and afterwards I’ll get the AVE back to Madrid to eat my lucky grapes at home. I’m sure I’ll have a great time”.
Taye returns for The Nose Race and joins the line-up for the international 5 km event in 2022
The popular athlete, who last year broke the women’s world record over 5 km, will be back for The Nose Race in a bid to beat her own record. The record-holder will join the likes of Jackob Ingebrigsten, Filip Ingebrigsten, Henrick Ingebrigsten, Jimmy Gressier, Karoline Grobdal and Konstanze Klosterhalfen as one of the favourites in the event.
The 5 km category, exclusively for a maximum of 50 elite runners, sets off at 7 pm in Carrer de l’Arquitecte Sert and follows the same fast and flat circuit which last year enabled Taye (14:19) and Aregawi (12:49) to take the two world records.
With the idea of everybody being able to get a first-hand view of one of the city’s most exciting runs and witness potentially historical performances by runners taking part on New Year’s Eve, this year’s international 5 km Nose Race will be shown live on the following websites: barcelona.cat/esports and cursadenassos.barcelona.
Popular 10 km category
The registration process for the 10 km category of The Nose Race is still open, but runners are signing up quicker than before this year. So far, 8,000 of the 10,000 available number bibs have already been taken by people who have signed up to take part. Women currently account for around 30% of participants.
In terms of elite athletes taking part in the 10 km event, notable runners include Meritxell Soler, Cristina Silva, Lithuania’s Dimitrijs Serjogins and Artur Bossy.
