The Mayor, Jaume Collboni, will sign a decree for the measure to come into effect from Friday, 31 January.

The decision corresponds to the City Council’s commitment to people receiving reliable and honest information. At the same time, we want to continue to be global leaders in technological humanism and digital democracy, a desire which has become incompatible with staying on the X social media network (formerly Twitter), immersed in a spiral of disinformation and intransigence that directly undermines democracy.

Given the situation, the Mayor, Jaume Collboni, will be signing a decree that sees Barcelona City Council close down its current profiles on the platform on Friday, 31 January. The move makes Barcelona the first city in the Spanish state to adopt a measure that other European capitals, institutions and media channels have also opted for recently.

A single municipal account will provisionally be maintained on X, @bcn_ajuntament, which will only be used for information on emergencies, weather alerts and mobility disruptions.

All municipal information will continue to be accessible on the rest of the official municipal channels, on the City Council website, newsletters and current mobile apps.

Members of the public can continue to find information on competitions, sports activities and municipal programmes via the following channels:
