Barcelona launches the BCN Water Solutions project for the sustainability of sports swimming pools

Barcelona City Council, in collaboration with Fluidra and INDESCAT, has launched the project BCN Water Solutions, an innovative initiative seeking to improve the sustainability and efficiency of sports swimming pools in the city. The main goal is to identify the most urgent challenges for these spaces and develop solutions that promote the responsible use of water, energy efficiency and a better experience for users.
In this first stage, a study was carried out with the participation of 18 sports facilities, companies in the sector, public administrations and other organisations. This work helped identify six key areas for improvement: reduction of water consumption, optimisation of energy costs, digitalisation, efficient management of infrastructures, predictive maintenance and the improvement of the experience of users.
According to the Councillor for Sport, David Escudé, this project “reaffirms Barcelona’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, in highlighting its backing for a more efficient management of sports facilities with a reduced environmental impact.”
One of the most outstanding aspects of the project is the use of digitalisation as a key tool for operative efficiency and informed decision-making. Through technologies such as measuring and simulation systems and control panels, the idea is to optimise the management of resources. These measures can be complemented with practical solutions such as swimming pool covers, reducing water evaporation.
The project also adopts a new vision for transforming swimming pools in multi-purpose spaces, combining sports uses with recreational and social uses. This inclusive approach seeks to adapt to the needs of different types of users, creating environments that respond to people’s current demands.
With this initiative, Barcelona becomes further consolidated as a leading city in innovation applied to sport, promoting sustainable solutions that guarantee better management of facilities and help to make the city a role model in sustainability at a global level.
