This initiative forms part of the Barcelona with Sustainable Sport awards programme and seeks to promote a more efficient use of water resources during droughts and guarantee the sustainability of sports activity.
The projects that have been awarded subsidies, developed by 45 public centres and 12 private entities, will have a maximum of 12 months to implement the proposed improvements.
Projects by category
The awards were divided into two main categories:
- Category A: This includes 24 projects aimed at improving the reuse of water. Examples include recovering the water used to clean swimming pool filters for use in toilets, the recovery of greywater from showers to be used for watering, or cleaning boats with reclaimed water.
- Category B: With 33 approved projects, this category includes measures for repairing leaks, replacing taps with water-saving alternatives, using ultra-violet equipment to disinfect water and installing systems to monitor water consumption.
The selected projects had to meet specific requirements, such as minimum consumption of 2,000 m³ per year and an initial budget of over 10,000 euros.
A commitment to sustainability in sport
The aim of these subsidies is to ensure optimal management of water resources, both in the public and private sector, fostering the creation of more sustainable sports facilities that are adapted to deal with drought situations. The initiative also seeks to establish long-term structural measures and to build an innovative sports system with a commitment to the environment.
At the same time, the IBE will continue to develop campaigns to raise public awareness of the importance of respecting the environment and integrating sustainability values into sports activity and our everyday lives.
