The Plenary of the Municipal Council has approved awarding the Gold Medal for Sports Merit of the city of Barcelona to Pere Miró Sellarés and Rafel Niubó Baqué, with the unanimous support of all municipal groups.

Pere Miró Sellarés is being recognised for a career of more than thirty years at the International Olympic Committee (IOC), where he has held positions of responsibility and has been a key figure in the dissemination of Olympic values ​​and equal opportunities through sport. His links with Barcelona include his role as a municipal councillor and member of the management team of the 1992 Olympic Games.

Rafel Niubó Baqué is receiving the distinction for his work as an international role model in the field of sport and health, with a model based on inclusion, social cohesion and healthy lifestyle habits. Founder of several sports entities, he was Secretary General for Sport of the Generalitat de Catalunya and is the author of the book Barcelona i l’esport, un model d’èxit (Barcelona and sport, a model of success) (2025).
