Central Archives
The origin of Barcelona City Council’s central archives lies in the review that the Municipal Archives carried out in 2008 of the Archive Organisation Project, the tool for planning municipal archival policy which had been in force for more than 20 years. That review revealed there had been a very significant increase in dispersed documentation, not subject to archive treatment, in the various City Council areas and sectors.
The 2008-2011 Archive Master Plan noted this and, together with other factors, concluded it was necessary to think in terms of archival planning across the whole City Council. Finally, the Municipal Council meeting held in November 2010 approved the Municipal Archives System Regulations, which set up central archives for the central areas and sectors of municipal administration, independent bodies, municipal companies and other municipal entities with their own legal personality.
These central archives of the Municipal Archives of Barcelona incorporate, manage, safeguard and make accessible the semi-active documents from the management files of the areas, sectors, autonomous bodies, municipal companies and, where applicable, consortiums where Barcelona City Council is the majority stakeholder. They are also introducing the document management system (AIDA) into the administration of their functional sphere.
Barcelona City Council's central archives are as follows:
- Archive of the Area of Social Rights, Health, Cooperation and Community
