In 2009, the “Canviem-ho” project, together with the Sexual and Reproductive Health Care Assistance (ASSIR) programme in Barcelona, set up a working group with staff from the two services to detect the needs of male users of ASSIR. That gave rise to another intervention project in which ASSIR’s professional teams offer couples a comprehensive response, especially expectant fathers.

The “Canviem-ho” project’s main aims in the Sexual and Reproductive Health Care Assistance programme in Barcelona are to:

  • Achieve a high level of involvement, on the part of the men, in raising and looking after their children from their partner’s pregnancy onwards, by improving their parental and emotional skills.
  • Encourage their involvement in domestic chores, family responsibilities and education.
  • Tackle any doubts and difficulties regarding the birth.

This project gave rise to the Guide to male behaviour for active, responsible and conscious fatherhood, [Cat] which today is being put into practice by ASSIR professionals and “Canviem-ho” project staff in pre-natal groups for men, with ten annual groups a year.
