Barcelona celebrates the presentation of the 19th Dexeus Woman Award to Professor Arri Coomarasamy and a research grant to Valeria Tubita, supporting research in women's health and in recognition of advances in maternal health and endometrial cancer.
On Thursday, January 16, 2025, Professor Arri Coomarasamy, Chair of Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine at the University of Birmingham, was awarded the 19th Dexeus Woman Award . This international recognition highlights his outstanding contribution to preventing pregnancy losses and reducing maternal mortality.
Professor Coomarasamy is the driving force behind the E-MOTIVE study, which developed a new method for the rapid diagnosis and combined treatment of postpartum hemorrhage in vaginal deliveries. This work, published in the journal New England Journal of Medicine, involved a sample of 200,000 women in hospitals in Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Tanzania, demonstrating a 60% reduction in severe postpartum hemorrhages.
During the ceremony, a scholarship from the Dexeus Woman Award was also awarded to researcher Valeria Tubita, from the Biomedical Research Group in Gynecology at the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute in Barcelona (VHIR). Her project, titled ‘Preclinical study of the combination of Anti-Her2 therapies and PARP inhibitors in Her2-positive endometrial cancer’, focuses on evaluating the efficacy of combining two therapies to enhance the antitumor response in endometrial cancer.
The event, held at the Dexeus Barcelona Hospital, was attended by several prominent figures, including the Deputy Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni; the Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo; the Health Minister of the Generalitat, Olga Pané; the Queen, Letizia Ortiz – who presented the award – and the Government Delegate in Catalonia, Carlos Prieto. The President of the Dexeus Woman Foundation, Pedro N. Barri, emphasized the excellent work and ongoing efforts of Professor Coomarasamy in the field of women’s health.
