Society. El Born CCM presents a new edition of the Referències cycle as part of the exhibition ‘Towards an education in freedom. Schooling in Barcelona 1908-1979’.

El Born CCM is hosting a new edition of the cycle for reflection as part of the exhibition ‘Towards an education in freedom. Schooling in Barcelona 1908-1979’.

This month sees El Born CCM offer a new edition of Referències. Presented as a space for reflection on the role of memory in the contemporary world, the cycle returns this spring as part of the exhibition ‘Towards an education in freedom. Schooling in Barcelona 1908-1979’.

This new edition will be offering three dialogues between international personalities and leading figures in the city, who will be focusing on three main topics for current society: feminism, activism on social media and environmental sustainability. The sessions seek to contribute to the construction of a democratic, critical and committed society. The series of debates will thus highlight the importance of including values such as feminism and ecology in education systems, as well as expanding the role of social media to fight causes, address challenges and achieve goals in favour of sustainability.

Three Thursday afternoon sessions will highlight the need to understand citizen education as a vehicle for building a democratic present. Because of this, the programme adopts the title of Contemporary Pedagogies and offers discussions based around contemporary education.

Social Networking Pedagogies – 6 May at 6 pm

The opening session is by Anastasia Kavada and Simona Levi. The latter was chosen by Rolling Stone magazine in 2017 as one of the 25 people in the world who are shaping the future. This dialogue on education through social media sees the guests explore the possibilities of social transformation via digital media, the threats and potential of democratic practice and the processes of collective organisation, mobilisation and decision-making.

Environmental Pedagogies – 13 May at 6 pm

Tabi Joda (recognised on various occasions for his agroforestry work in defence of nature) and Alfons Pérez will be taking part in this second dialogue in education relating to the environment. Environmental Pedagogies sees the pair discuss to what extent a harmonious link between the environment and living beings needs to be built to avoid an irreparable ecological disaster.

Feminist Pedagogies – 20 May at 6 pm

Tithi Bhattacharya was one of the organisers of the international women’s strike on 8 March 2017, with fifty countries around the world taking part. Now she teams up with Bel Olid to round off this cycle of dialogues. Feminist Pedagogies is the last session and sees the pair explore how in recent years feminism has become one of the most influential and binding political movements in the world, as well as its role in the development of other struggles and the universalisation of basic rights.

Access to Referències is free but must be booked in advance. The sessions will also be available on the YouTube channel for El Born CCM. The activity is in Catalan and English, with simultaneous interpreting.
