The guide is a friendly, flexible and visual resource setting out good practice to introduce the gender perspective into sports activity right across the board in the city.

Promoting and fostering participation in sport without inequalities is one of the main goals of the Barcelona Institute of Sports (IBE). Because of this, the Gender Equity Cabinet at the IBE, with support from the Directorate for Gender Services and Time Policies, have produced the ‘Sport and Gender’ guide, a friendly, flexible and visual resource setting out good practices for incorporating the gender perspective into the city's sports activity right across the board.

The initiative is part of the Action Plan for 2021-2023, working to guide sports policies with a gender vision and offering, through recommendations, advice and action. The plan is aimed at helping to eliminate gender inequalities found throughout society, particularly in the area of sports, as well as offering a series of tools to enable associations to design and implement their own equality plans.

During the presentation of the guide at the Museu Olímpic i de l’Esport, the Councillor for Sports, David Escudé, affirmed: “Inequality in sport is evident. Not just in sports and physical activities but in managerial positions too. More women are needed in training and management, so we can reach a more normal situation”.

A path focused on the equality plan

The guide’s various sections reflect on gender construction and the stereotypes it gives rise to, proposing not just changes for reducing inequalities but also equality measures for preventing any type of discrimination between men and women in sports associations. All these initiatives are a preliminary step towards the implementation of the equality plan, an orderly series of measures for achieving equal opportunities for everyone.
