The Women and Sport Awards Ceremony 2023 was held today, 19 October, recognising the success and devotion of women in the field of sport.

Barcelona City Council, through the Barcelona Institute of Sports, recognised the winners of this year’s edition of the Women and Sport Awards in a ceremony in the Saló de Cent at 6 pm. There were 64 candidates altogether, in the five categories for these awards that highlight women’s talent in the sporting realm.

The ceremony began with the Media Award, where the prize went to the TV3 sports journalist Imma Pedemonte, with over 40 years of career experience behind her in the Sports Department. Pedemonte has been a presenter on the midday, evening and weekend news, as well as various sports programmes such as Gol a gol and Tot l’esport.

The next category was the Sports Club Award, which went to C.E. Barcelona Tsunami, the in-line hockey club which has kept its place in the women’s top flight since 2022.

The Sportswoman Award went to Laura Ester Ramos, the Olympic water polo player who won the silver medal in the London Olympic Games in 2012 and in the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020.

The Woman Sports Director Award went to Amanda Gutiérrez, the founder of FUTPRO, the first trade union for women football players. A member of Top Women in Sports 2022, Gutiérrez managed to secure a historic agreement to match women’s and men’s bonuses at the national team level.

The fifth and final award, the Mireia Tapiador Award for the Promotion of Sport went to Maria Planas Monge, basketball player, trainer, national coach and technical director. Planas trained the Catalan and Spanish women’s national basketball teams between 1978 and 1985 and in 2009 she was awarded the Royal Order of Sports Merit by the National Sports Council.

Each award and each candidate represent a story of hard work, effort and passion, testimony to the current change and progression in sport. Initiatives such as the Women and Sport Awards make Barcelona a city which is not only passionate about sport, but also a role-model in the fight for gender justice and equality.

The ceremony also served to present the sixteenth “Quadern Dones i Esport“, a promotional tool fostering women’s sport with a compilation of articles on subjects linked to women in the sphere of sport. The compilation is published twice a year.
