Jana Fernández, player on the FC Barcelona women’s team, was the focus of the last chapter of the Women with Impact series, reflecting on her career, the challenges facing women’s football and the need to continue working for equality in sport.

A career shaped by a passion for football

She’s proud to wear the Barça coat of arms, a symbol that represents her passion and the work she has put in over the years.

Jana is delighted that the growth of the sport means that more and more girls want to play football. She says with satisfaction that it’s now possible to form women’s teams in many towns, something that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.

The importance of believing in women’s football

The player also reflected on the challenges that still lie ahead. “People really need to believe in women’s projects, it’s not just a matter of financial resources, but of investment in terms of enthusiasm and commitment”, she says.

Despite the progress made, she underlines the fact that there are still inequalities and stereotypes to overcome, commenting that “We need to reach the point where it doesn’t seem at all strange to see a girl with a football”.

Beyond sport: fighting for equality

Jana also spoke about the sexualisation of women’s bodies, an issue that affects many different spheres, including sport. Although this is something she has not experienced personally, she recognises that it’s a problem that causes unease, and one that needs to be tackled by society.

This and other issues are part of the new chapter of Women with Impact, where Jana Fernández inspires us all with her experience as a Barça player, and as an advocate for equality in sport.
