Itinerary through Ciutat Vella: from Portal de Sant Antoni to Hospital de la Santa Creu
We offer an itinerary for discovering the medieval past and modern era of the current El Raval neighbourhood based on the accounts of documents conserved in the Arxiu Municipal de Barcelona. The route starts at the old Portal de Sant Antoni gateway and ends at Hospital de la Santa Creu (which currently houses the Biblioteca de Catalunya library), with a stroll around Carrer del Carme to discover the area’s historical buildings and most iconic sites.
The Barcelona discovered along this route is one of urban planning changes resulting from a new way of understanding the world, with the medieval left behind and the modern period beginning, when part of the city’s walls started to be pulled down, new streets opened up and mansions, hospitals and teaching institutions renovated and built, a taste of which will be given from the itinerary.
