Itinerary through Horta: a walk through the former village of Sant Joan d’Horta
We offer an itinerary for discovering the former village of Sant Joan d’Horta based on documents conserved at the Arxiu Municipal del Districte d’Horta-Guinardó, a route along a series of buildings that reveal the history of the area in all its aspects: from Plaça de Santes Creus and Plaça d’Eivissa, centres of social and commercial activity since the 19th century, to cultural organisations such as the Foment and the Ateneu Hortenc, not to mention the Sant Joan d’Horta church and Can Mariner farmhouse, both medieval in origin.
Horta consists of land inhabited since the Iberian and Roman periods, but with a break in continuity up to the Middle Ages. The oldest document in which the term appears dates back to 965. It was incorporated into the Barcelona plan in 1904, by which time Horta had close to 5,000 residents and its most important industry was tanning, thanks to the existence of mines and wells that supplied the area with sufficient water. You will discover it all through this route.
