Technology
We want to consolidate Barcelona as a fairer and more equitable city in terms of the creation and production of technology, incorporating the gender perspective. Our goal is to democratise one of the most important drivers of economic growth and achieve a greater degree of gender justice, in favour of a more digital and feminist Barcelona.
In Barcelona, only 26% of jobs in the ICT sector are held by women, and just 8.6% of these are technical positions. The so-called digital or technological gender gap highlights the under-representation of women in ICT environments, and the increasing existence of gender inequalities in one of the sectors that is generating the highest number of new jobs worldwide.
Faced with this situation, Barcelona City Council is launching a series of initiatives devised to promote gender equity in the city's ICT industries, and feminism as one of the central pillars in the construction of a digital society.
Governmental measures aimed at working towards gender equity in technological environments have been designed with the collaboration of a group of almost forty women technologists working in different sectors in Barcelona. Within this framework, the aim is to:
- Bridge the digital gender divide through active employment policies and an ICT skills acquisition plan for women which includes the BcnFemTech training programme.
- Give visibility, recognition and support to women in the ICT sector in Barcelona and create joint action.
- Awaken and inspire tech vocations among girls from early childhood.
The BcnFemTech training programme offers 850 hours of training for women working under precarious conditions, who have been directed to the programme by social services, or through the Làbora programme, Barcelona Activa's inclusion services, the Assistance, Recovery and Reception Service (SARA), Women's Support and Information Points (PIAD) or the Municipal Institute for People with Disabilities (IMPD), for example. It’s been developed in collaboration with Barcelona Activa, Endesa, Factoria F5 and the Fundació Formació i Treball, and will enable fifty women who are currently in vulnerable situations to enter the labour market as professionals in programming and web development.
