Household waste collection
Barcelona has a municipal waste collection service that includes different systems adapted to the particular features of each neighbourhood: street bins for selective collection, pneumatic waste drop boxes, a door-to-door collection service and mobile platforms, among others. The service also has an extensive network of Green Points, where citizens can bring all waste that cannot be deposited at the aforementioned disposal points, as well as various special collection services for furniture and old junk, old clothes, rubble sacks, garden waste, fibre cement and asbestos.
There is a wide-ranging waste collection system to ensure the selective collection of the waste generated by the close to 1.6 million inhabitants of a city that produces around 1.35 kilos of waste per inhabitant per day [data from 2019].
Collection systems for the 5 categories
The 5 most common household waste categories are: organic waste, packaging, paper and cardboard, glass and general waste. In Barcelona, 5 different models are in place for the collection of these categories of waste.
