Municipal waste collection fee
The municipal collection fee for waste generated in private households is a municipal tax conceived to encourage the proper management of household waste that is generated in the city of Barcelona. This fee has been in place since 1 July 2020, and the proceeds will be used to improve the public household waste collection service.
The purpose of this municipal fee is to improve waste treatment, increase selective collection and reduce emissions in accordance with European Directive 2018/851 of the European Parliament and of the Council and the Metropolitan Programme for the Prevention and Management of Municipal Resources and Waste. In the metropolitan area as a whole, this fee has already been introduced in 23 out of 36 municipalities.
760,000 homes in Barcelona are fitted with domestic water meters. Of these, 12,500 are exempt from paying the fee under Law 24/2015 on urgent measures for addressing the housing emergency and energy poverty or vulnerability. Roughly 557,000 homes, or 73.3% of the total, pay between €27 and €51 per year, which is equivalent to €2.25 to €4.25 per month.

The Metropolitan Waste Treatment Fee (TMTR) is an environmental tax that is collected and managed by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB). This fee is intended for the proper management of domestic and commercial waste generated in the municipalities of the Barcelona metropolitan area (AMB) and helps to finance the treatment of waste collected by these municipalities in the eco-parks and in the triage, composting and recycling plants for all categories of waste (paper/cardboard, metal, plastic and light packaging, organic matter and other waste), where the necessary processes are carried out to recover them as new resources or to obtain energy.
