Street cleaning and waste collection in Barcelona
The different neighbourhoods in the city vary in their structure and uses, which requires a street cleaning system that takes into account all these differences. An analysis of the specific characteristics of each neighbourhood, such as the old quarters, commercial areas and hilly areas, the population density and footfall in any given area, and new urban developments such as the Barcelona Superblock initiative, is essential for the design of a street cleaning service that suits the needs of each.
In addition, the climate crisis is now a reality and we need to move towards a waste management model based on the circular economy, promoting a reduction in the amount of waste we generate, the use of existing resources and an increase in selective waste collection.
Barcelona has a great deal of potential, and needs to be an active part of the solution. The City Council, municipal services and its citizens need to work together to create the Barcelona we all want, a responsible, mature Barcelona that is ready to take on the challenges of the future.
Cuidem Barcelona is the new street cleaning model that will help to build a city that is better looked after, a city where as much of the waste we generate as possible is re-purposed, and where the only thing we are going to cut is vehicle emissions in order to ensure cleaner air.
More investment and more staff are needed, to reach more places more often, and we are listening closely to what residents in the city's different neighbourhoods are saying so as to design better street cleaning systems and improve the maintenance of public space.
From March on, Cuidem Barcelona will be rolled out all across the city, and the changes will be clearly noticeable.
