Zero waste
Modern day society is immersed in a spiral of consumption in which a large volume of waste is generated on a daily basis. Many of the products we buy and consume end up as waste. Without proper processing and treatment, this can take generations to disappear.
It is clear that we need to make urgent changes to our current consumption model. The climate crisis that we are currently faced with, where society consumes at a faster rate than the planet's regeneration capacity, means that we must change our habits and apply all those actions that allow us to live in a more environmentally-friendly way.
As consumers, we have a very important role to play in this shift in consumption habits. When we shop, we can choose which products and brands we want to buy and which standards we will follow. We can also use reusable products or repair those that are damaged, while making a concerted effort to shop locally. These two small steps would go a long way to reducing our carbon footprint.
Citizens will not be alone in this process. Barcelona City Council is firmly committed to a zero waste policy, implementing waste prevention programmes, encouraging the reuse and repair of products and appliances and promoting food recycling. If we all work together in this mission, we will make Barcelona a benchmark in the fight against climate change.
Below are some tips on prevention, reuse, repair and food recycling, conceived to help you live a less wasteful and more environmentally-friendly life.
