Greenery and Biodiversity Charter

Greenery and Biodiversity Charter

The city’s green infrastructure is a resource for both a healthy and quality life and for conservation and biodiversity. The City Council is responsible for taking care of and promoting this green infrastructure by managing existing greenery and adding more. These commitments were expressed through the implementation of the Greenery and Biodiversity Plan for 2013-2020, in the government measure “Programme for Promoting Urban Green Infrastructures”, in the Nature Plan 2021-2023 and in the Climate Emergency Action Plan for 2030.

The boost to green spaces in the city is being carried out considering their function of serving citizens, adapting to climate change and activating natural processes to preserve nature. The goal is to innovate to maximise socio-environmental services.

This innovation must include planning to achieve equity and connectivity in the distribution of greenery. It must also include a new way of projecting greenery. This is the framework for the Greenery and Biodiversity Charter.

The Greenery and Biodiversity Charter is a reference guide that sets out how to design cities and green spaces while taking account socio-environmental services and incorporating pro-biodiversity and pro-sustainability criteria. It is aimed at all parties involved in the design project, but more specifically it is intended as a common reference framework for project builders and the various technical areas at Barcelona City Council involved in the drafting process for projects in the city’s green spaces.
