Recreation areas for dogs
As a city Barcelona is committed to the coexistence between people and pets and provides specific services for that: spaces where animals can run, play and attend to their toilet needs.
Barcelona currently has more than one hundred areas for dogs, almost half of which are recreation areas with an average size of between 300 and 400 square metres.
Off-leash dog areas during specific time slots
Dogs must be kept on a leash in all parks and gardens. However, there are more than a hundred places where dogs can be let off the leash at certain times of the day. These areas are also known as shared use zones (ZUCs).
Unlike other areas for dogs, these are open spaces in the city, such as streets, squares, boulevards, parks and other public spaces where, during morning and afternoon time slots, it is permitted to let dogs off the leash. Outside of the stipulated time periods, they must be kept on a leash.
Special protection parks and gardens
In the city there are a number of green spaces where the entry of dogs is forbidden, even if they are on a leash. These are parks and gardens where special consideration is given to biodiversity and the variety of plants.
As stated in Environment byelaw, the City Council reserves the right to restrict the entry of dogs in areas where it is necessary to protect the quality of the plants or facilities.
