Urban Agriculture Observatory
The Urban Agriculture Observatory provides a diagnosis of the state of agriculture in the city of Barcelona, including:
- A map of the city’s allotments
- Figures on some of the allotments’ physical and biological variables
- Figures on the individuals and organisations that use the allotments and how they cultivate the land
- Figures on the social-environmental services provided by allotments
- Figures on the production and crop diversity of the allotments
Promotion of urban agriculture
Interest in urban agriculture in Barcelona and other cities in the world has increased as a result of the proliferation of local agro-ecological experiences and a growth in social demand for urban sites where people can grow their own food.
Various socio-environmental and health crises have increased awareness about the importance of a healthier diet, the need to reconnect with nature and to live in fairer and more sustainable cities from a social and environmental perspective.
Barcelona City Council has launched several political initiatives and municipal plans that include the promotion of urban agriculture in one way or another:
What are the OAU’s objectives?
- To conduct a social and environmental analysis of urban and peri-urban allotments and agricultural spaces.
- To offer a tool for driving and integrating agriculture in the rollout of the general city model.
- To gauge the benefit of agriculture for urban biodiversity.
- To gauge the volume of vegetables produced by allotments in the city.
- To gauge the benefit of agriculture for individual and community health, fostering the participation and organisation of people and organisations.
- To give people tools for looking after and conserving nature.
- To create a space of communication and participation in the sphere of urban agro-ecology.
- To assess the social and environmental impact of community projects and build the results into decision-making.
- To strengthen the shared governance of these spaces with local people and organisations.
