Trees of local interest
Barcelona has more than two hundred protected trees.
Trees and palm trees that are very valuable for the city and form part of a municipal catalogue, the Catalogue of Trees of Local Interest, as they have become unique examples that stand out for various reasons, either for their historical value, their age, their uniqueness or simply for their spectacular nature.
We currently have more than 200 listed trees, mainly corresponding to individual trees or palms, while a quarter make reference to groups that include more than one.
Trees listed individually include some that stand out for their historical importance, such as the date palm at the Casa de l'Ardiaca and the first pine tree on Travessera de les Corts. Others are listed because of their size or age, including the centenarian magnolia in the Jardins de la Maternitat, the cedar and the lime tree in the Parc del Laberint d’Horta, the ombú in Plaça Francesc Macià, the holm oak at Can Viladet, in Gràcia, and the erythrina in the Jardins de Teatre Grec.
In terms of sets of trees, notable examples include the plane trees on La Rambla, the lime trees on Rambla de Catalunya, cedars in the Jardins de Pedralbes, magnolias in the cloister of the Cathedral and the washingtonias on Av. Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia.
Elsewhere, four other trees in the catalogue, all located in the Jardí Botanic Històric de Montjuïc (a large-leaved ash, an American ash, a wingnut and a sycamore) are also listed as monumental trees in Catalonia, the highest category awarded by the Government of Catalonia.
We invite you to discover these and many other unique specimens. You can find out what they are and where they can be found in the catalogue.
